Nina Satie is a Brazilian artist born in 1995 in São Paulo, where she continues to live and work. Through painting and drawing, Nina delves into the delicate interplay of self-image and spirituality, sexuality and queerness, young womanhood, and black existence. Her work is characterized by symbolic imagery deeply rooted in the traditions of Afro-Latino surrealism.
Her vibrant, femme-centered figures serve as protagonists in self-evoked myths, inhabiting a world rich with the flora and fauna of the southern tropics. These figures invite viewers to uncover subtle dimensions imbued with psychological and emotional undertones, offering an impermanent fugue state into the realm of ancestral dreams.
Nina’s artistic inquiry centers on the intersections of identity and individuality, cultural ancestry, Afro-diasporic myths, and the cycles of nature. Her work also highlights the emancipation of black women’s bodies through spiritual expression. By exploring and unraveling the concept of "Otherness" and its implications in contemporary visual representations of black femme bodies—particularly in the global south—her art draws a parallel with the preservation of her homeland’s plants and animals. These elements become symbols of resistance, permanence, and self-governance, echoing the resilience of the women in her cultural heritage across generations.
